i would walk around the old town and go up to the fortress and walk around, you can get a good view of the city from there; i would go to the Hallein salt mine too, it's really fun! i would also make sure you go to Hellbrunn. they have a really fun fountain tour there, all i can say is be prepared to get wet if you go on the tour. otherwise you could just wander the grounds at Hellbrunn. if you've got access to a car, you could up the untersberg or the gaisberg and get a view of salzburg from way above. you could also tour the stiegl brewery or take a walk around the pond where the filmed part of the sound of music! you'll find plenty to do just by wandering the streets!

Depending on what your interests are, there is a lot of great shopping, hiking, scenery, and local pubs.

Once you get there, you will be bombarded with Mozart and The Sound of Music. After you have passed that, walk up to the Salzburg Castle, see the Floral Gardens, The local downtown market.

I've been three times and loved it, no matter what my intentions were. As a child there were tons of things to do, as a young adult wanting to socialize and sometimes do some hiking I was very satisfied. Now as an adult wanting to see more history, or some natural beauty, I love it.

You can use for more info on markets, hotels, points of interest, etc.

If you are going to be there for more than a couple days, I would HIGHLY suggest visiting the small town outside of Salzburg called Halstatt in the Lake District and rent a boat or check out the salt mines. It is GORGEOUS and like nothing you've ever seen before.
