Hello, I was wondering if anyone can tell me please if it is possible to take a day trip from Vienna International Airport to the city? I am travelling from Salzburg to Rome via Vienna and as I have a 5 hour stopover (yahoo!) I thought it maybe possible to visit to St Stephens cathederal. Do I have to pass through customs/immigration as I will be arriving from Salzburg? Thanks for any info or weblinks.
Thanks for the info Petra…in answer to your query about why I am flying to Vienna from Salzburg, it is because I am flying from Salzburg to ROME, it is just that I was unable to get a direct flight that didn’t go via Vienna.
Transit stop tour in Vienna?

It might be pretty tight! Vienna’s city centre is about 19 km (12 miles) from the airport. You will need to catch either a shuttle bus (25 min bus ride) from the Schwechat International Airport or take a train to Wien Mitte (downtown Vienna). Look for the Schnellbahn sign (the station is on the lowest level). Your end destination will be Stephansplatz station which is right by the Stephansdom cathedral.
Here is Vienna Schnellbahn online in English with info on train routes and time schedules:
This is a great Vienna online guide:
I’m curious – why did you choose to fly from Salzburg to Vienna, when you could have taken the train and enjoyed viewing the Austrian countryside? Then you wouldn’t have to deal with customs and long airport line ups.
