Planning my own trip to Europe (but, never been there)?

Hello!

I’m planning a trip to Europe for October 2010. I plan to stay about 2 weeks, and am going with my mom. Here is my dilemma; we’ve never been to Europe, don’t know anyone in Europe, and don’t have any clue how to start planning. My mom has wanted to go her whole life (61 years) and so have I. Since this might be the only time we can go together, we’d like to see as much as possible. Here are the places we want to *hopefully* visit: London, Dublin, Paris, Rome, and Salzburg.

I briefly looked at cruise lines and (obviously) none go to all of these places. So, I decided to plan the trip by myself since I didn’t know the rates for travel agents these days. I want to spend no more than $8000 USD. (I don’t even know if that is an, “Idiot, you can’t do all that for that amount.” or “Suuuure, no problem, you can do all that for an even cheaper amount!”)

Here is what I have seen planning by myself (basing off of October 2009 prices).
About $1800 for two tickets from US to London and Salzburg to US
About $100 for two tickets from London to Dublin via ferry and train
About $970 for two tickets from Eurail Pass for a 4 Country Pass (rough estimate)

Ok, this is just transportation, not even hotels or anything. But, I’ve seen websites that say “LONDON-PARIS-ROME from $1059 per person!! CLICK HERE NOW!!!” These include tickets, hotel, and other transportation. Are these scams or can I really go a whole lot cheaper, but still have decent hotels and transportation? Any advice on where to go for deals like this? Or, any advice at all?
