If you're goint to Manhattan I suggest the train becuse when you go by car there is so much traffic. I sugest that you visit Central Park or see a broadway show.

I live in brooklyn so I suggest that you should visit Coney Island. Also visit the brooklyn promanade in downtown brooklyn.

Manhattan from brooklyn heights by train is 5 or ten minutes.

A few of your questions I can answer well:

- The U.S. Open takes place at the end of August. It takes place at the USTA Center in Flushing. To get there by public transportation, you hop on the Queens-bound #7 train on 42nd Street in Manhattan and take it to the next-to-last-stop (Shea Stadium / USTA Center) in Queens. It's about 8 miles from Manhattan, takes about an hour on the #7 train. Official website with all the info you need (including event calendar):

- If you are going shopping or sightseeing, you need to be discreet. Do not display your cameras, money or jewelry. Don't be an easy victim for thieves, pickpockets and muggers. You need to be street-smart.

- Travel light. There are plenty of fast food places all over New York City, and it doesn't make sense to pack your meals unless you have special dietary needs.

- Lower Manhattan + Staten Island is doable in 1 day, yes.

- You should do shopping + Midtown Manhattan together. There's isn't much shopping in Upper Manhattan.

- Brooklyn is a very big place. You need to pick out what you want to see there and plan it as its own trip.

- Manhattan is not a good place to drive a car to. You can never find parking (not for cheap anyway), and there is always traffic congestion. Parsippany is pretty far from Manhattan-- I hope you have thought through how you are going to get there.

Hope this helps.
