My wife and I are planning a trip to Germany and Austria. We’ll be traveling from Munich to Salzburg in September. What are the nicest trains that one can book in advance? Thank you!
There really isn’t much a choice? like when you enter the hauptbahnhof in munich there is a travel room where you can buy tickets and sightseeing passes and all that. There they could also give you advice on what train is best. Also on longer train rides, you often have to switch trains so there’s no guarantee it will be the “nicest”
most are pretty nice though so you shouldn’t have anything to worry about!!
The ICE is definitely the spiffiest, but since the trip is only about an hour, any of the InterCity trains work well, too. Book a first class compartment if you can. In the summer it’s worth being in first class because second class can be packed. Visit to check schedules; click on the English-language option near the upper right of the home page. In Salzburg be sure to eat at the Restaurant O’Gartl in a quiet residential neighborhood just a 15-minute walk from the downtown sights. It’s in the Hotel-Pensione Nonntal (which is a lovely place to stay, incientally, if you haven’t booked a hotel yet).
You should take the ICE (InterCityExpress) out of Munich.
I don’t recall there being a lot of choice, but the “standard” train seemed plenty nice to me.
