Does anyone know if I will be able to leave the airport in Vienna during a stopover?

salzburg flights
sunnycoastcraig asked:

I have a five hour stopover in Vienna when I travel from Salzburg to Rome. Will I be able to travel into Vienna in that time? Will I be able to, or will I have to stay inside the terminal due to immigration / customs regulations? If I can leave the terminal, will I have to pass through customs / immigration again in Vienna before my onward flight to Rome? Thanks for your help :)

I travel back forth at times while i was still in the Army from US to Germany. At times we would have a layover in England for 8 or so hours. I was never stopped . Just be back an hour before your flight. Your luggage will leave with out you if you miss your flight.

You clear customs when you enter the EU after that you have to go through security only, regardless of whether you leave the airport or not. My suggestion take the CAT train to downtown, check the schedule, it goes every 20 minutes. You can also take the subway or the buses outside the terminal building as well there are plenty of taxis. The CAT train is the fastest and does not get bogged down in traffic.

You’ll be able to leave the airport. But you will have to go through immigration to leave the air-side part of the terminal. If you are not a EU citizen, make sure you have your onward ticket / itinerary ready to show the immigration officer – it’ll make things quicker.

The previous answer is not correct – your flight will not depart with your luggage on it if you are not there (very strict rules on this in case you have packed a bomb). Instead they will find your luggage and take it off. Then the plane will be late and when you DO turn up, the airline will be cross and will charge you for re-booking onto a later flight! Be on time :-)

True, you can leave the airport. And yes, you must go through security again, but this is no problem, it’ll be the same as in Salzburg.
